Pix for Foreigners: How a CPF Unlocks Brazil's Instant Payment System

If you’ve spent more than a few days in Brazil, you’ve already noticed it: nobody pays with cash anymore, and almost nobody pays with a credit card either. From the açaí stand on the beach to the dentist downtown, everyone asks the same thing — “Tem Pix?” (“Do you have Pix?”). Pix is Brazil’s instant payment system, it’s free, it works 24/7, and it has quietly become the default way money moves in the country. The catch for foreigners: you cannot register a Pix key, send a Pix, or even receive one without a Brazilian CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas).

This guide explains exactly why your CPF is the gatekeeper to Pix, what you can do once you have one, which banks and fintechs accept foreigners, and how to get set up in days — not weeks.

What is Pix, and why does Brazil love it?

Pix is an instant payment system created and operated by the Banco Central do Brasil (the Brazilian Central Bank). It launched in November 2020 and became the most-used payment method in Brazil within three years, surpassing both debit and credit cards in transaction volume.

  • Instant. Money arrives in the recipient’s account in under 10 seconds, any time of day, weekends and holidays included.
  • Free for individuals. Personal-account holders pay nothing to send or receive a Pix. Businesses pay a small fee.
  • Universal. Every Brazilian bank and licensed fintech is required to support Pix. One QR code works at every merchant.
  • Pix Keys. Instead of typing an account number, you send money to a “key” — a CPF, an email address, a phone number, or a random ID — that points to the recipient’s account.

For a tourist or a digital nomad, Pix replaces the need to carry cash, change money at the airport, or pay foreign-card fees on every coffee. For a property buyer or investor, it replaces wire transfers between Brazilian accounts. It is, simply, how Brazil moves money.

Why a CPF is required for Pix

The Banco Central’s regulations require every Pix account to be linked to a tax-registered identity. For individuals, that identity is the CPF. There is no exception for tourists, no workaround through a foreign passport alone, and no way to “borrow” someone else’s account legally. Three things depend on the CPF:

  1. Opening any Brazilian bank or fintech account. Without a CPF, the application form will not even let you submit it.
  2. Registering a Pix key. The most common Pix key for individuals is literally the CPF number itself.
  3. Receiving a Pix. Even if a Brazilian friend wants to send you money, the destination account must be tied to a CPF.

The good news: a CPF is open to anyone in the world, regardless of visa status or whether you live in Brazil. You do not need to be a resident, and you do not need to set foot in the country.

What you can do with a CPF and a Pix-enabled account

Once your CPF is issued and linked to a fintech or bank, Pix unlocks the entire local economy:

  • Pay restaurants, taxis, and street vendors by scanning a QR code.
  • Split bills with locals instantly — no more “I’ll Venmo you” friction.
  • Pay your monthly Airbnb, coworking space, gym, or Portuguese tutor without card surcharges.
  • Receive money from a Brazilian client if you do remote work for local companies.
  • Pay condo fees, electric bills, and government tax slips (DARF, ITBI) directly from your phone.
  • Send a deposit to a real-estate broker or notary when buying property.

Best banks and fintechs that accept foreigners

Not every Brazilian bank welcomes non-resident applicants. Some require a Brazilian residence address and an in-person visit; others are fully remote-friendly. The table below summarizes the most foreigner-friendly options as of 2026.

ProviderTypeAccepts non-residentsSetup speedBest for
WiseMulti-currency fintechYes (most countries)1–3 daysTravelers and nomads who want BRL alongside other currencies.
NomadBrazilian fintechYes3–7 daysBrazilians abroad and foreigners with Brazilian ties; integrates well with US accounts.

NubankDigital bankYes for foreigners with valid CPF and Brazilian phone1–3 daysSimplest UX; very popular among young Brazilians.
Itaú / Bradesco / SantanderTraditional banksUsually require in-person visit1–3 weeksProperty buyers needing a notarized account statement.

For most foreigners, the fastest path is the same one millions of Brazilians use: get a CPF first, then open a digital account at C6, Inter, or Nubank, then register your CPF as your Pix key. The whole process — from “I don’t have anything” to “I just paid for dinner with a QR code” — takes about a week.

Step-by-step: from no CPF to your first Pix

  1. Apply for a CPF online. EasyCPFBrazil handles the Receita Federal application, document review, and follow-ups. Most applications are issued within 3–7 business days.
  2. Choose a Pix-enabled account. If you live abroad, start with Wise or Nomad. If you’ll spend months in Brazil, open C6, Inter, or Nubank — they support Pix natively and have English-language onboarding flows.
  3. Register a Pix key. Inside the app, go to the Pix menu and choose “Cadastrar chave” (Register key). Use your CPF as the key — it is the most universal and the easiest for Brazilians to send to.
  4. Top up your account. Send funds in via Wise, a wire transfer, or by depositing cash at a lottery house (lotérica) once you arrive.
  5. Make your first Pix. Scan any QR code with the app, confirm the amount, and tap pay. The recipient sees the money instantly.

Common pitfalls foreigners run into

“I’ll just use my foreign Apple Pay or credit card”

You can — but expect FX fees of 4–7% on every transaction, and many small merchants (markets, beach kiosks, taxis, Uber drivers in some cities) do not accept any card at all. They expect Pix.

“My friend will let me use their Pix”

Sharing accounts violates the Banco Central’s rules and can trigger anti-fraud blocks on the friend’s account. It is also a poor solution for anything recurring.

“I’ll get a CPF when I land”

You can, but the queue at Receita Federal walk-in offices in Rio, São Paulo, and the airports often runs days or weeks. Applying online from your home country before you fly means you land with a CPF already in hand and can open a Pix account on day one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Pix without being a resident of Brazil?

Yes. Residency is not required to apply for a CPF or to open a Pix-enabled fintech account. You only need a valid passport and (for some banks) a Brazilian phone number, which you can get on arrival.

How much does Pix cost?

Pix transfers between individuals are free. The Banco Central does not allow banks to charge personal users for sending or receiving Pix, regardless of amount.

Are there limits on how much I can send?

Yes. By default, the night-time limit (8pm to 6am) is R$1,000 per transaction. Daytime limits depend on the bank and your account history, and you can request increases inside the app. Property purchases and large transfers usually use a TED (a different system) instead.

Can I get a CPF entirely online?

Yes. The Receita Federal accepts online applications from foreigners abroad, but the forms are in Portuguese and small errors can lead to rejection. EasyCPFBrazil handles the entire process in English so you do not have to navigate the system yourself.

Does my CPF expire?

No. A CPF is permanent and tied to you for life. It can become “irregular” if a tax declaration goes unfiled, but it does not expire and you do not need to renew it.

Get your CPF and start using Pix in days

Pix is no longer optional in Brazil — it is the default. Whether you are coming for a two-week trip, a six-month digital-nomad stay, or to buy your first apartment in Rio, the cleanest path to using Pix is to get your CPF before you need it.

EasyCPFBrazil applies on your behalf, reviews every document before submission, communicates with Receita Federal in Portuguese, and delivers your CPF to your inbox — typically within a week. Once it is in hand, opening a Pix-enabled account is a 10-minute job.
